LIFE is too important and the life goals plan it to live it with honor. So, goal setting is important which involves the advancement of action plans intended to motivate and direct an individual to the completion of a goal. Setting goals is directed by goal-setting criteria which is called SMART goal criteria.

SMART goal is an instrument used to form criteria to help improve the probabilities of succeeding in the accomplishment of a goal. It helps guide goal setting. So, a SMART goal includes all of the principles to help concentrate the energies and grow the probabilities of accomplishing the set goal line. The term “SMART” is the contraction of the words as; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely.

S.M.A.R.T Principles

S – Specific

SMART goal is specific which has a meaningful and greater chance to be accomplished. While formulating the goal, one should be definite about what he wants to achieve. He must think thoroughly about this process as duty for his goal. When setting SMART goals, the reactions to widely held ‘w’ questions must be considered:

  • Who – a person who wants to be involved to attain the goal (reaction to this is particularly essential while someone is employed in a group task).
  • What – refers to exactly what a person is going to achieve.
  • When – denotes the time frame defining the setting of a goal.
  • Where – there must be an identification of the relevant setting or occasion, in which goal is going to be accomplished. Such interrogation might not constantly apply, exclusively if a person is setting subjective goals.
  • Which – It defines relevant problems or necessities. This query could be useful in determining if specific goals are realistic. Like, if we are going to set the goal to develop a business related to baking, but we didn’t do such business before, this can be a problem. As a consequence, we possibly will enhance the particulars of the goal and we will be learning how to bake before opening a baking business.
  • Why – reflects the reason for the goal that why a person wants to achieve this goal.

M – Measurable            

It refers to what specific gauges we are going to use to determine and measure the progress towards the accomplishment of a goal. The measurement process marks a goal line further concrete. As, if there is a plan which is going to take a few months to be completed, then there must be set certain indicators after bearing in mind the specific tasks or plans to be accomplished.

A – Achievable            

It centers on; the prominence of a set goal and in what ways something can be done more effectively to make it achievable. In case, difficulties are found, one must learn certain new skills and knowledge about varying approaches to get the specific goals done. The set goal is intended to stimulate intrinsic and extrinsic incentives.

R – Relevant            

It refers to the concentration on somewhat that creates a sense with wide-ranging commercial goals. As, if the goal line is to present a fresh consumer product, then there must be such arrangements in which general relevant commercial goals can be presented. If the company is B2B which is enhancing into the consumers’ market then the goal will be relevant.

T – Timely            

While setting a goal, there must be clearly well-defined realistic timeline to get chances to succeed. Defining a target date or the time for the accomplishment of a goal is important. There must be asked the relevant questions about the goal time limit and what can be attained within that time frame. Knowing the time frame makes a sense of urgency. For example, if a goal is taking six months to get accomplished, then there should be defined what will be attained the middle way in the set process.
